Smart Cleanup Tools removes empty meta records, since WordPress also ignores them. It is possible that The Grid somehow uses meta records that are empty (just name). Can you confirm with the Grid author in which format it saves the meta records, what is the content and can the meta record content be empty for some reason? I can make updates to the plugin based on that if needed.
